Goodbye Dr. Tiller

This morning, a man was killed while serving as an usher in church. He was a man of great faith and character--a man who helped women across the country who were in pain and in need. He was a man who stood up for everything he believed and took risks in an effort to allow women the right to choose. His name was George Tiller. The media is labeling Dr. Tiller "The Abortion Doctor." Those of us who know him and of him, however, simply called him a blessing--shelter in what is often a tempest of emotional turmoil. The right wing conservatives will tell you only that he performed late term abortions. What they won't tell you, however, is that he performed terminations when poor pre-natal diagnoses assured birth parents that their child would have a quality of life that would amount to constant confinement; round the clock care; and little or no cognitive functioning. Dr. Tiller stood by women who were selfless enough to release their children before birth, knowing that no child should have to suffer--women who made difficult decisions for themselves, their babies and their families. It is a heartbreaking choice that no woman takes lightly--a choice a woman hopes and prays she'll never have to make. I know. I had to make that choice.
